How many people would it take to keep this secret?
Before believing a vast cover-up, count the people it would require to stay silent, for years, without a single slip. The maths rarely holds up.
Try asking one plain question about the next huge cover-up story that lands in your feed: how many people would actually have to know, and keep quiet, for this to be true? Not the mastermind at the top. Everyone. The technicians, the assistants, the interns, the people who process the paperwork, the ones who clean the building afterward. Every single one of them, silent, forever, without a single slip after one too many drinks at a wedding.
A physicist did the maths
In 2016, Oxford physicist and cancer biologist David Robert Grimes decided to put a number on that question instead of just gesturing at it. In a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE, he built a mathematical model estimating how long a conspiracy can survive before it collapses, based on how many people are in on it, how long it has to hold, and how often real leaks and whistleblowers have historically occurred. The model draws on documented cases like the NSA surveillance programme exposed by Edward Snowden and the Tuskegee syphilis study, to calibrate a realistic leak rate per person, per year.
The results are almost comically strict. According to Grimes's calculations, for a secret to hold for a full century, the model caps out at roughly 125 people involved. Stretch that to twenty five years, and you can afford about 500. Just five years, and you're already pushing 2,500. Once you cross into the tens or hundreds of thousands, the maths stops being generous at all.
What that means for the big ones
Apply that to a genuinely massive claim, like a faked moon landing, and the numbers get uncomfortable fast. Grimes estimated that keeping the Apollo programme secret would have required roughly 411,000 people, based on NASA's own workforce at the time, and his model puts the odds of that many people staying silent past four years at essentially zero. For a global vaccination cover-up run jointly by the two major health agencies most often named in that theory, he estimated around 22,000 people would need to be involved, a much smaller crowd, and even then the model gives it a shelf life of well under 35 years before someone talks.
It helps to see why the numbers move so fast. Grimes's model treats each added person as a fresh, independent chance for the secret to slip, whether through a document left in the wrong folder, a conversation overheard, a conscience that gives out after a bad year, or simple carelessness. Multiply a small yearly risk of exposure by tens of thousands of people, across several years, and the odds of total silence stop being merely unlikely. They become close to impossible, in the same way that flipping a coin and getting heads twenty times running isn't impossible, just so rare you'd never actually expect to see it happen.
None of this proves that every official explanation is correct. Grimes's model is a probability, not a certainty, and small, tightly held secrets absolutely do survive for decades: a handful of people can keep a genuine confidence for a lifetime. What breaks down is the specific combination that huge cover-up theories tend to demand: enormous headcounts and total, permanent silence, at the same time. History's real secrets are usually one or the other, never both.
A secret gets easier to keep as it gets smaller. Most of the biggest theories out there ask you to believe the opposite.
The count as a first check
You don't need Grimes's equation in front of you to use this trick. Before taking a sweeping cover-up seriously, just try to picture the actual staff list. Who would have known, at minimum, for this to be true? Add up the departments, the contractors, the family members who'd have noticed something off for years. If that number climbs into the thousands, ask yourself honestly how many silent, career-long secrets you've ever heard of at that scale outside of fiction.
The next time a claim rests entirely on 'everyone involved has kept quiet for years', do the headcount first. Sometimes it holds up fine, small circles really can keep small secrets. But when the number of required silences runs into the tens of thousands, the theory has already answered its own question, whether it meant to or not.
