It was true when it was written. Is it still true now?


A rule, a recall, a piece of advice can be completely accurate the day it's published, and quietly wrong a few years later. Here's how that happens.

For nearly a decade, one number got repeated in classrooms, parenting articles and paediatrician waiting rooms everywhere: two hours. That was the ceiling the American Academy of Pediatrics set in 2013 and 2016 for children's entertainment screen time. It wasn't a guess. It was carefully considered guidance, and for years it was simply correct.

In January 2026, the AAP retired it. Not because the old advice had been wrong when it was written, but because the world it described had moved. That two-hour figure was built around a much simpler kind of screen: a television, sitting in one room, playing one thing at a time. A phone in a pocket, carrying school work, friendships and entertainment all at once, is a different object entirely, and a single number stopped being able to describe it honestly.

The advice didn't fail. The context did

According to reporting in The Conversation, the AAP's newer approach drops the fixed hourly limit altogether and asks a more layered question instead: what is a child actually doing on that screen, with whom, and does it fit their age and their family's routine? The academy's own guidance material now states plainly that there isn't enough evidence to support one screen time number applying to every child, and steers families toward looking at the quality of what's happening on the screen rather than the minutes on a clock.

Here's the part worth sitting with: none of the articles written in 2017 that quoted 'no more than two hours' were lying to anyone. They were reporting the guidance that existed. If you find one of those articles today, unlabelled and undated, sitting in a search result or forwarded in a family group chat, it looks exactly as authoritative as it did the year it was published. Nothing about the text tells you the ground has shifted underneath it.

The same shape shows up everywhere

Screen time is just one example of a pattern that repeats constantly: a genuine rule, price, recall notice or safety alert that was accurate on its publication day and has since been updated, reversed or closed out, while the original page sits online unchanged, waiting to be rediscovered. A product recall gets lifted once a fix is issued, but the original recall notice keeps circulating. A price or a deadline gets extended, but the screenshot announcing the old one keeps getting reposted as if it were still counting down.

What all of these share is that the content itself is not fabricated. Somebody really did write that rule, issue that recall, set that deadline. The falseness arrives later, quietly, once circumstances move and nobody updates the copy still floating around.

This is a different problem from the usual hoax, and it's worth treating it that way. A fabricated story has a villain: someone invented it. An expired one has a timeline instead. There's no dishonest author to catch, no forged document to expose, just a fact that was accurate on the day someone wrote it down and a calendar that kept moving after they stopped checking back. That's precisely why it's so easy to miss: there's nothing suspicious to notice, only something ordinary to ask.

One extra question before you pass it on

So when a piece of advice or a rule crosses your feed and it sounds authoritative, the useful question isn't only 'was this ever true'. It's 'is this still true, today, for the thing I'm looking at'. Most of the time, checking takes one search: the name of the guideline plus the current year, or the institution's own page for its latest version. If nothing more recent turns up, you're probably fine. If something does, you've just caught the exact moment a fact quietly expired.
