Why do plane crashes scare us more than the drive to the airport?
A dramatic image sticks in memory far longer than a quiet statistic. That gap between what we recall and what actually happens has a name, and a real body count.
Two people board a plane. One grips the armrest through takeoff, replaying every crash report they've ever seen on the news. The other slept through the drive to the airport without a second thought, the same drive that carried, statistically, far more risk than the flight ahead. Neither of them did the math. They didn't need to: their memory did the deciding for them, and memory is a terrible statistician.
Psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman gave this pattern a name in the early 1970s: the availability heuristic. We judge how common or likely something is by how easily examples of it spring to mind, and vivid, dramatic, recent events spring to mind far faster than quiet, ordinary ones. A single striking image can outweigh a decade of unremarkable statistics, simply because it's the one your brain can actually retrieve.
A grim, real-world test of the theory
Nobody designed the biggest test of this idea on purpose. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, many Americans grew afraid of flying and drove long distances instead. Driving felt like the safer choice, the one you controlled with your own hands. The psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer, working with colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, later compared the actual road death toll of the following year against what would statistically have been expected. Their estimate: roughly 1,600 more accident related deaths occurred on American roads in the twelve months after the attacks than the usual pattern predicted.
Flying had not become safer. Driving had not become more dangerous. What changed was a mass, understandable shift in behaviour, driven by a fear that felt urgent because it was so vivid, aimed at a threat that was, mile for mile, far less statistically likely than the ordinary act of driving to work. The researchers also found the effect was strongest in places with good roads and near where the attacks happened, exactly where switching from a plane to a car was easiest and the fear was rawest.
What makes a memory available
Three things make an event easy to recall, and none of them is how often it actually happens. Recency: something you saw yesterday beats something from last year. Emotional charge: a story that made you gasp lodges harder than one that left you unmoved. Repetition: an event covered by every channel for a week feels far more common than one mentioned once and forgotten, even if the second happens a thousand times more often.
News coverage, by its nature, runs on exactly those three ingredients. A shark attack is rare enough to be news precisely because it's unusual, yet the coverage it gets can leave people more wary of the ocean than of the car ride to the beach, a drive that carries far greater real risk. The strange result is that the safer something has become, the more newsworthy each remaining incident is, and the more common it can end up feeling.
The rarer an event, the louder it gets covered, and the louder it's covered, the more common it feels. That loop runs backwards from reality every time.
Putting a number back where a memory was
None of this means dramatic events don't matter or that fear is foolish. It means memory alone is a poor tool for estimating how likely something is, because it was never built for that job. It was built to help you learn fast from whatever felt threatening, not to keep an accurate running tally.
- When something feels alarmingly common, ask: how many cases, out of how many people or trips, over what period?
- Notice if your worry traces back to one striking story rather than a pattern of many.
- Compare the vivid risk to a mundane one you never think twice about, like the daily commute.
- Give recent, heavily covered events less weight than the actual rate would justify.
The passenger gripping the armrest isn't wrong to feel something. Fear of flying is common and rarely comes from nowhere. But the feeling is answering a different question than the one that matters for making a decision: not 'does this scare me' but 'how often does this actually happen, compared with the alternative I'm not afraid of at all'. The drive to the airport was the riskier leg of the trip. It just never got its own headline.
