Should you trust a brilliant expert speaking outside their field?
A two-time Nobel laureate spent decades promoting a cancer cure that trials found no better than a sugar pill. Genius in one field doesn't travel to another, and here's the test that proves it.
Here's a strange fact about brilliance: it doesn't travel well. Someone can be the sharpest mind of their generation in one field and still be confidently, publicly wrong the moment they wander into another. That's not a contradiction, and it isn't hypocrisy either. It's how expertise actually works: it has a shape, a border, a specific territory it was earned on. Step past that border and the same person is just a smart, persuasive amateur like anyone else. One chemist's career shows exactly why, and it's a more useful lesson than any list of red flags.
Two prizes, one field each
Linus Pauling won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954, then another in Peace in 1963 for his nuclear disarmament work. Both were earned, both were real. In 1966, a biochemist suggested to him that huge daily doses of vitamin C might extend his life, and Pauling ran with it into medicine, a field where he held no clinical training at all. He wrote 'Vitamin C and the Common Cold' in 1970, then 'Cancer and Vitamin C' in 1979, arguing that megadoses could treat and even cure cancer.
The claim didn't stay untested. The Mayo Clinic ran two controlled trials, in 1978 and 1984, comparing high-dose vitamin C against a placebo in cancer patients. The result was as plain as a result gets: patients given vitamin C lived no longer than patients given the dummy pill. Other researchers went further, calling Pauling's own cancer trials 'ill-defined and unreproducible', the kind of verdict a chemist would never have accepted about a paper in his own field, on molecular structure or chemical bonding, where his judgment had actually been tested and proven for decades.
A badge that quietly stops meaning what it used to
Pauling wasn't an isolated case, oddly enough. Researchers who study this pattern have given it an informal name: some Nobel laureates, later in their careers, drift into ideas their own colleagues consider scientifically unsound, and they do it with the same confidence that earned them the prize in the first place. One explanation is simple enough to sting: journalists and the public keep granting these experts authority on any topic at all, not just the one they were actually recognised for, and universal acclaim doesn't exactly train someone to say 'I don't know' more often. If anything, it trains the opposite, since every previous audience treated their confidence as proof.
A prize proves you were right about one thing, once. It was never a passport to every other subject.
Paul Nurse, a Nobel laureate himself, put it bluntly when warning younger prizewinners: the danger is 'believing you are expert in almost everything, and being prepared to express opinions about most issues with great confidence, sheltering behind the authority that the Nobel Prize can give you'. Coming from inside the club, that's about as clear a warning as it gets.
The question that actually settles it
None of this means a brilliant person is wrong the moment they step outside their lab. Curiosity crosses borders all the time, and it should: some of the best insights in science have come from someone bringing an outsider's question into a field that badly needed one. The trouble starts when confidence crosses the border without the credential following it, and when an audience lets the old title do the vouching for the new claim instead of asking who else has checked. The fix isn't complicated, and it doesn't require doubting genius in general. It just asks you to keep the prize and the claim as two separate questions, checked separately.

- Check whether today's claim sits inside that exact field, or just sounds adjacent to it
- Look for what specialists in THIS field, not the person's home field, say about the claim
- Treat 'ill-defined and unreproducible' from peers as worth more than fame from outsiders
Pauling's chemistry never stopped being real, and neither did his Nobel prizes. What changed was the subject under discussion. The moment expertise moves from 'these two things bond in this way' to 'this pill cures this disease', the question isn't how many prizes sit on the shelf. It's whether anyone qualified to judge the new claim has actually looked, and what they found when they did. That one shift, from admiring the person to checking the field, is the whole difference between being impressed and being informed.
