Can you really do two things at once? The science says no


Answering a message while writing a report feels efficient. What your brain is actually doing is jumping back and forth, and each jump has a cost you don't feel in the moment.

Try this: read a paragraph while someone talks to you about something else. You'll notice it doesn't work the way it feels like it should. Either the paragraph stops making sense, or the person's words become background noise you'll have to ask them to repeat. That small failure is a clue to something bigger. What we call multitasking almost never means doing two things at once. It means doing one thing, then the other, then back again, fast enough that the seams don't show.

The brain doesn't split, it swaps

According to a research summary published by the American Psychological Association, most of what people call multitasking is really task switching: attention moves from one activity to another and back, rather than genuinely running both at the same time. Each switch carries what psychologists call a switching cost. Part of that cost comes from a step called goal shifting, deciding to stop pursuing one goal and start pursuing another, and part comes from rule activation, loading up the mental instructions the new task requires while suppressing the ones the last task needed.

The APA summary also describes a strange detail from decades of research: even when people know exactly when a switch is coming, and could in theory prepare for it in advance, they are still measurably slower on switch trials than on repeated ones. Psychologist David Meyer, whose research the summary draws on, estimated that the accumulated cost of switching can eat up as much as 40 percent of someone's productive time, even though any single switch might cost only a fraction of a second. Small losses, repeated constantly through a day, add up to something you'd notice if you could see it directly. Mostly, you can't.

The people who multitask most aren't the best at it

Here is where the story gets genuinely surprising. In 2009, Eyal Ophir, Clifford Nass and Anthony Wagner at Stanford University published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences comparing people who juggle several streams of media constantly (heavy media multitaskers) against those who rarely do (light media multitaskers). The natural guess going in was that the heavy multitaskers would have trained themselves into being better at switching between tasks. That guess turned out to be backwards.

In a task that required participants to switch repeatedly between classifying letters and classifying numbers, the heavy multitaskers in the study paid a switching cost 167 milliseconds larger than the light multitaskers, and they were slower even on the trials that didn't require switching at all. The heavy multitaskers also did worse at ignoring information they'd been told was irrelevant, whether that meant blue rectangles they were told to ignore in a filtering test or letters that had appeared earlier but weren't the ones they needed to track in a memory test. Ophir summed up the search for a hidden advantage bluntly: 'We kept looking for what they're better at, and we didn't find it.'

Practice at switching doesn't make you faster at it. It just means you've gotten used to paying the cost.

Why the feeling of efficiency lies to you

None of this means people who juggle several things are lazy or careless: quite the opposite, juggling takes real effort, which is exactly why it feels productive. Effort and output aren't the same thing, though, and the Stanford study is careful to note it can't say whether heavy multitasking causes the difficulty filtering distractions, or whether people who already struggle to filter distractions drift toward multitasking because a single sustained task feels harder for them to hold onto. Either way, the pattern doesn't support the story that switching between tasks sharpens your ability to switch between tasks.

The busy feeling of three tabs, a phone, and a document all open at once is real. It's just not the same thing as three tasks getting done well simultaneously. What's actually happening is a rapid handoff, with each handoff quietly taking a slice of accuracy or speed that never shows up as a single dramatic mistake, just as a slightly worse version of everything.

What holds up, and what doesn't

This isn't an argument for treating every task as sacred and undisturbed. Plenty of activities tolerate being paired: folding laundry while listening to a podcast rarely causes trouble, because one of the two barely uses conscious attention. The switching cost bites hardest when both tasks demand real thought: writing while replying to messages, following a meeting while drafting an email about something else entirely. Those are the pairings where the sense of getting more done and the reality of getting less done pull furthest apart.

So the next time doing three things at once feels like the efficient choice, it's worth remembering that feeling is not the same as measuring. The switching itself is what's expensive, not the individual tasks, and no amount of practice at switching seems to make that particular bill any smaller.
