Is a high star rating actually reliable?
Two products both show 4.6 stars. One has 12 reviews, the other has 12,000. The number is identical. What it tells you is not.
Two products sit side by side in your search results. Same category, similar price, and the exact same rating: 4.6 out of 5. You'd have no reason to prefer one over the other, based on that number alone. Then you scroll down and notice one has twelve reviews. The other has twelve thousand. Suddenly the identical number means two very different things, and only one of them deserves your confidence.
The reason is almost embarrassingly simple once you see it: a tiny handful of reviews can be knocked around by a single unhappy customer or a single overjoyed one. Twelve reviews averaging 4.6 might mean eleven perfect scores and one three-star complaint, and a different mix of twelve people could easily have landed at 4.2 or 4.9 instead, for the exact same product. Twelve thousand reviews don't wobble like that. At that size, a handful of cranky outliers barely nudges the number at all, which is precisely why the average becomes worth trusting only once there's enough of it to lean on.
The average was never as simple as it looks
It also helps to know that the number on the page usually isn't a plain average to begin with. Amazon says so directly: 'Amazon uses advanced models to calculate star ratings, not just a simple average.' Two of the biggest factors it names are recency, since 'products may improve or decline in quality over time, and recent feedback better represents the current customer experience', and verified purchase status, where reviews tied to a confirmed transaction carry more weight than reviews that aren't. The stated goal, in Amazon's own words, is 'to show ratings that honestly reflect what customers think about a product', which only underlines the point: the single number is already a summary of a summary, built from choices you can't see just by glancing at the stars.
Recency matters for a reason you've probably lived through yourself without naming it. A kitchen gadget launches, the first few hundred buyers love it, the rating settles at a strong 4.7. Then the manufacturer quietly swaps in a cheaper part, or a different factory takes over production, and the reviews from the last two months start reading very differently from the reviews at the top of the pile. If the display simply averaged everything together, that early honeymoon would keep propping up a number that no longer describes what arrives at your door today. Weighting toward newer reviews is how a rating stays a live snapshot instead of a fossil.
The badge helps. It isn't the whole answer
A 'verified purchase' label is a genuinely useful signal, and worth checking for. Local news outlet WBAY, drawing on consumer watchdog guidance, put it plainly: reviews without that badge 'are much more likely to be fake' than reviews carrying it. But the same reporting is careful to flag two other things worth reading alongside the badge: a product with unusually few reviews compared to similar items in its category is itself a reason for caution, and a cluster of similar reviews landing within a short window of time deserves a second look, badge or no badge. None of these signals works alone. Together, they sketch a fuller picture than the star count ever could by itself.
- How many total reviews sit behind the average, not just for this item, but compared to similar products
- How recent the bulk of the reviews are, and whether the rating has shifted over time
- What share of reviews carry a verified purchase badge
- Whether the distribution has a normal, messy spread, or clusters oddly at the extremes
None of this means you need a spreadsheet before buying a phone charger. It means treating the star count the way you'd treat any number you can't immediately place in context: useful, but incomplete on its own. A 4.6 built on twelve thousand honest transactions and a 4.6 built on twelve reviews posted the same week are not remotely the same claim, even though they look identical at a glance. The stars are the headline. The count, the dates and the badge are the article underneath it, and that's where the actual information is sitting.
The star count is the shortest possible summary of a story. Read a little further before you believe it.
